CHEERLEADING courses have been a big hit across the county this summer.
Children aged between seven and 16 have attended courses in west Cumbria organised by professional instructors Cheer Starz.
The Whitehaven-based group, which include Newcastle Falcons cheerleader Sophie Anderson, have been teaching children their moves during week-long courses.
Instructor Cheryl Andrews, 36, of Whitehaven, said: “Cheerleading is a lot of fun. It is also a great form of exercise.
“We have had a lot of children turn up to the courses so far and they have really enjoyed themselves, which is nice to know.
“Cheerleading is not just an American activity, it is getting bigger in the United Kingdom too.
“It gives children more confidence and we can really teach them new skills.”
Last week a course was run in Cleator Moor, while this week the Carnegie Theatre in Workington is hosting the group.
Cheryl added: “The children had a lot of fun last week and we have had positive feedback.
“We are looking to increase the number of places we take the courses so in the coming years there will be more classes.”
A week-long course costs £25 and there are still places on next week’s Cockermouth course, which will be held at the British Legion from 10am until midday and at Keswick’s Labour Club from 1pm until 3pm starting on August 18.
