Uppies and Downies - at Lamplugh

The village of Lamplugh used to have an annual 'uppies and downies' football match.

Not for the faint-hearted... uppies and downies match in full swing.

If you're not aware, Uppies and Downies is a rather wild form of football played out each Easter at Workington. Those living on the 'up' side of the town play against the 'down' side of town but there are few rules and it's a very rough game. I always thought it was unique to Workington although I was aware of bottle-kicking and similar events elseswhere in the UK. But I stumbled across a reference yesterday at the record office to the game having been regularly played at the village of Lamplugh. It was only a passing reference but mentioned it had died out by about 1809. Perhaps it's time it was revived?! If anyone has any more details do let me know.
