Trio of new teams for County League

THE Tesco Cumberland County League is going to be bigger and better next season, even though two teams, Hearts of Liddesdale and Parton Reserves, quit at the end of last season.
Three new teams, Harraby CC Reserves, Warwick Wanderers and Workington-based Borough, have joined up to take the total number of teams in the league next season to 23.
And two new committee members have come on board. Former Whitehaven Miners secretary Mel Morton has joined as vice-chairman, while Moresby-based Neil McCrickard takes over as fixtures secretary.
Herbert Briggs, the league’s press officer and vice-chairman, said: “Mel has been with Whitehaven Miners for more than 30 years and was looking forward to a peaceful retirement from the game.
“But we’ve talked him into joining the committee and, in his own words, ‘he’s not getting any younger and can’t commit the time his former secretary’s job deserves’.
“And Neil has come on board, taking over my former job as fixture secretary.”
The league will kick-off when Whitehaven Cup winners Longtown play league champions Netherhall in the Charity Shield curtain-raiser on July 31.
Longtown will host the match, sponsored by Keswick Launch, at their Moor Road ground (2pm ko). Money raised from the match will go towards the Macmillan Nurses.
