Safety Net to launch local centres

THE child-help organisation Safety Net intends to set up a base in both Whitehaven and Workington.
The charity, which has been going for six years in Carlisle, has expanded its service into West Cumbria, in the wake of the closure of the NSPCC Wedgewood Centre (Mirehouse) earlier this year.
It provides advice and support for Copeland and Allerdale young people (aged from three to 19) who have been raped, sexually abused or suffered domestic abuse.
It has secured some grant money to support the service, most recently £5,000 from the County Council (Allerdale Combined Fund) and a welcome donation of £1,000 from Workington Ladies Golf Club.
Abigail Finnegan, chief executive of Safety Net, says the aim in West Cumbria is to deliver therapy for 10 children per week, two days a week.
“We have had some kind and generous donations but more is needed. When people are doing sponsored events or holding fundraisers I hope they will consider Safety Net as their cause. This is a really vital service and can help transform young lives,’’ she said.
Safety Net can be contacted on 01228 515859. Anyone wishing to raise funds locally or make a donation can call Jane Saxon on 01946 696317.
