Rosie Watling, the former head of Carlisle’s Belle Vue Junior School, will replace Emma Sharp who left the role last week to return to her work with the local education authority.

The school is operating with a series of acting headteachers following the departure of Jonathan Dennison, who was suspended more than a year ago.

The reasons behind his suspension have never been made public and parents have been calling for answers over the school’s future leadership.

Mrs Watling has also worked as an acting head at Kingmoor Junior School in Carlisle.

Chair of governors Sharon Weightman said: “Mrs Sharp wishes to thank all pupils, staff, governors, parents and the wider community for the support which they have given her during her time at the school.

“Mrs Watling will join us and she has been working with Mrs Sharp, the staff and governors to ensure a smooth transition.

“The governing body is proud of the many successes achieved by our school over the last year, both academic as well as within the enhanced enrichment opportunities that we offer.

“Our committed team of staff continue to strive to raise standards in achievement and attainment for all our children which is at the very heart of all that we do – we always wish to go ‘the extra mile’ to personalise the educational experiences for each and everyone of our children.

Cumbria County Council is handling the ongoing investigation, although allegations made against Mr Dennison are unknown. But the council has insisted they do not relate to child protection matters.

Mr Dennison took over as head of the 220-pupil school in 2003. He was previously head of Longtown Junior School, where he won an award in the North East and Cumbria Teaching Awards.
