Neighbourhood Management in action

The South Whitehaven Neighbourhood Management initiative provides the platform for residents to challenge the delivery of local services covering crime, health, employment and environment and the means of implementing changes.

The Neighbourhood Management Programme is a four year programme running between 2006-2010 covering the area of South Whitehaven and incorporating Greenbank Woodhouse Kells Mirehouse East and West and Mirehouse.

Joanne Walker, Neighbourhood Manager for South Whitehaven outlines some of the areas in which it is involved and the schemes implemented in response to feedback received from residents. 

Crime
South Whitehaven Neighbourhood Management provides revenue support for 5 PCSO's (Police Community Support Officers) to work within the wards of South Whitehaven. The PCSO's support the Community Police Officers to make our area a safer place to live, the Community officer for Hensingham and Mirehouse East is PC Peter Wright, PC Phil Carter is the Community Police Officer for Woodhouse and Mirehouse West. Other initiatives supported through the partnership include the provision of 4 Neighbourhood Wardens, who will soon be relocating to St Peters. recent funding from the leverage fund from South Whitehaven has contributed towards the installation of CCTV cameras at Kells, Woodhouse Greenbank and Hensingham.

Health
The South Whitehaven partnership is working closely with the Primary Care Trust and other partner agencies to deliver health improvement interventions for ther residents of South Whitehaven, a lot of work will focus around the recenlty commissioned Health Impact Assessment for South Whitehaven.

Employment
Tackling worklessness is essential for economic growth and improving health, South Whitehaven are working closely with Job Centre Plus and various other agencies to move the agenda forward, looking at how we can break down the barriers to people getting back into employment. We are working closely with Lakes College to provide training and skills.

Living Environment/Most vulnerable
South Whitehaven will see the provision of a CAB advisor within St Peters and Mirehouse for a weekly advice session.
We work closely with leisure and environmental services to improve the neighbourhoods, over the last 18 months we have seen the additional resources of a mechanical sweeper, and fly tipping and environmental nuisance team, along with a new service to provide doorstep recycling for cardboard and plastics, this service will continue for at least the next 12 months.

The South Whitehaven Neighbourhood Management team are based at St Peters Church Hall Lakeland Avenue Woodhouse, the team includes, Joanne Walker Neighbourhood Manager, Sheila Sloan, Support Services Officer, Alan Forster Faircloth, community Involvement worker. The South Whitehaven Neighbourhood Management Board is chaired by Kells Councillor Allan Holliday.
