It's a small world

The mother-in-law has been on the phone - and with a rather surprising tale.

Still going! Jim Park

She pointed out that our Memory Lane this week included an incident from 75 years ago when a  boy's life was saved by the quick-thinking of George Brannan and Mrs Mulholland. What I hadn't realised was that the boy involved was my father-in-law, Jim! I'm happy to report that there were no lasting ill-effects from this brush with death. Indeed, Jim went on to be a strong swimmer himself and enjoyed a long career in the merchant navy - and latterly at West Cumberland Hospital.

Have your say

Dad enjoyed a long career in the Royal Navy. He actually became a swimming and diving champion. His own father Isaac Park, was a strong swimmer and a lifesaver, and the incident in the harbour prompted grandad to teach dad to swim - by throwing him int he deep end at the swimming pool!
