Fans flock to blues spectacular

A LITTLE bit of rain could not chase away the blues in Maryport this weekend.

Thousands of fans flocked from all over the UK and as far away as New Zealand for the 12th annual Maryport Blues Festival.

While ticket sales for the main stage were down on last year, in common with festivals around the country, the trail, a feature of the Maryport blues, saw pubs working to capacity and beyond as people crowded in to hear the more than 40 bands who were featured on the trail.

In the marquee, at the Netherhall Rugby Club, fans had paid to see some of the world’s best blues artists and were determined to enjoy every minute.

With 14 names on the bill, they got their money’s worth with acts like Robert Cray, Booker T, Canned Heat, Mica Paris and Paul Carrack.

There was a 15th act on the bill, too – local band, Feed Me – who had won the honour through a Battle of the Bands contest of opening the festival and forever more knowing that they had been on the same programme as the other greats.

The festival was also endorsed by BBC Radio 2 presenter and blues singer, Paul Jones, who will ran an unprecedented three-hour show on the Maryport festival on Monday.
