Even a lone voice can eventually be heard
SIR – I can appreciate Brian Parnaby’s frustration having not received a response regarding the gradual destruction of one of Whitehaven’s once premier churches. The silence and lack of interest shown does not come as a surprise to me.

Charity shops have vital role but where are our entrepreneurs..?
SIR – Further to the debate regarding charity shops in Whitehaven, personally I think they are doing a splendid job for the just causes that they serve and competition between traders is nothing new.SIR – I read with interest the pontificating of both Coun David Moore and the Rev John Bannister on the need to divert the £11million Pow Beck Sports Village to make up the shortfall of £10 million that the new Con/Dem Government has taken away from this community to complete the West Cumberland Hospital re-build. SIR – Whilst fishing off the north pier at Whitehaven a bloke shouted from the south pier that I was using the wrong bait. It seems I can’t even enjoy a day off work without pier to pier observations.SIR – I’d like to express my thanks to all those who attended the public meeting we held on Friday night with a view to forming a supporters’ trust for Whitehaven RLFC, and to all those who have registered their interest via www.trustinhaven.co.uk over the past couple of weeks.SIR – A distinctly hollow echo reverberates from Chris Huhne’s ‘no public subsidy’ assurances for nuclear. We are fully aware that the recent Sellafield ‘profit’ of £47million is wholly public money. A genuine assurance from Chris Huhne would include all public subsidies, for instance, profligate use of resources. SIR – May I use your column to say a very big thank you to people I don’t know, who came to my aid when I had a very bad fall outside Wilkinson’s a month ago and finished up in the hospital. Thank you also to the ambulance team and all at the hospital too.

Time to rethink how big money is best spent in the community
SIR – Now that the board of Whitehaven Rugby League Club have voted to put the club into administration, is it not time to reconsider the proposed investment of a reported £11 million into the creation of a new stadium?

‘People do not have to live aboard The World to be rich’
SIR – Are You Rich...? I had the good fortune of visiting your beautiful port a few days back. My husband and I were among those aboard The World.

Management urged to think of consequences of safety scheme
SIR – I would just like to say to senior management to stop and think of the consequences when sacking people like Walton Rudd. We know there are redundancies but we don’t need one of the Americans bragging that he is over for three years “to sort out the dead wood” and 2,000 employees were to lose their jobs.

Flashback to the working harbour
SIR – I was interested to see the older pictures, donated by Workington Library, and especially the one of the coal wagons near the former Quaker Oats factory (the erstwhile Pattinson’s Mill), (Whitehaven News, June 24).

Role of trades unions in helping workers receive a fair deal for all
SIR – Last week’s letter from Mr Parke accurately reflected the sense of injustice arising from recent dismissals at Sellafield for what have hitherto been regarded as minor transgressions.

Town looked great for judges
SIR – How brilliant to see Copeland claiming three of the North West region’s eight heritage awards in the national Green Flag awards for parks and open spaces. Nice to be up there alongside Tatton Park! And a great tribute to the work of our parks department and local community.

Nuclear economics is bad for the taxpayer and bad for safety
SIR – Do you feel sorry for the 800 persons in so-termed ‘surplus jobs’ at Sellafield? I suspect not – and why should you. The vast majority of those Sellafield workers who have applied will leave the company with more money than they’d earn between now and their retirement.

Sorry cycling’s gone off track
SIR – I would like to thank the Egremont Crab Fair Sports Committee for including cycling in the sports for the last four years. I have raced at every one, as has at least one other member of my family.

Family’s picture poser
SIR – I have been researching my family tree on my mother’s side for the last two years. I have traced the family back to 1760, but I have been told that we originated from the Cumberland area from around the 1500s.

The best of our community
SIR – Last Thursday I went to the charity show in aid of the shooting tragedy, in the Civic Hall, at Whitehaven. It was the best show I have seen for a long time, in fact, better than some shows on television.

Why the cadets who serve our town are worthy of this honour
SIR – So Brian Parnaby is “concerned” that the Freedom of Copeland was awarded to local cadet organisations and wants to “put it into perspective” (“Criticism of cadets’ honour”, The Whitehaven News, letters, July 8).
