ST James’ C of E Infant School, Whitehaven, has some outstanding features and is a “good” school, according to its recent Ofsted report.
The report noted that during the inspection, some outstanding teaching and learning was observed and this, together with the teachers’ good subject knowledge, motivates pupils to learn. The curriculum appeals to all and the school involves parents in their children’s education. The report suggests that by the end of Year 2, standards are above average in reading, writing and mathematics.
The children’s behaviour is excellent and aspects relating to the pastoral care of pupils are outstanding. In addition, the before and after school clubs give pupils the opportunity to relax and learn in a very caring and familiar environment.
The inspector noted that the children listen to each other, work extremely well together and show respect to adults.
Leadership and management are good; the head teacher has an excellent overview and sets a clear direction for improvement which she communicates well to governors and staff. The report indicates that staff are keen to be involved in new initiatives which they adapt to meet pupils needs.
The governors identify strongly with the school and have a good understanding of its strengths and areas for improvement.
The inspector highlighted the need to extend and refine the school’s tracking system so that information is easily accessible to staff in order to raise achievement.
Head teacher Jan Potter said: “All of the staff are extremely dedicated and hardworking and this shows in their teaching and our results. Our pupils are keen, enthusiastic, very well behaved and are, frankly, a delight to teach.
“This report is a result of staff, governors, pupils and parents working together to make St James’ Infants such a successful school.”
